I was wondering if anyone has ever given any thought to the possibility that all of the universe was not contained in a speck smaller than a proton but instead grew as is expanded just like everything else in this universe does. I believe anything that grows, grows by consuming matter from outside itself. Why would a universe be the exception?

If it grew by consuming matter from outside itself, where was that matter?

Not a Short Subject
There should be concern that this will turn into a very long short subject. If Jerry really wants to discuss the nature of the big bang he could post to one of the existing threads or propose a new one.

Re: Not a Short Subject
OK, I'd like to say one thing and then I'll find another place to discuss this. Don't you think it's kind of arrogant of man to think nothing can exist that is outside his perception? I don't believe the universe was created just for earth man. Isn't it strange that matter stops dividing at the same point where man can no longer detect anything smaller? It's just a thought. No answer required.

I don't think anybody thinks that.
What we think is that, if it's outside our perception, it can't affect anything in our perception, because then we'd be able to percieve it, at least indirectly.
Anything "supernatural" - disconnected from the natural universe - is by definition undetectable and unable to influence events in the universe. If it could exert influence, it wouldn't be supernatural, by definition.
If it can't ever affect us, and we can't ever detect it, who cares if it's there or not? Why bother thinking about it when there's literally no way to determine if your thoughts are accurate or not?
