Re: Finding the first post in a thread
Should have mentioned this yesterday, the bug affecting links to posts in member message lists after the message has been edited has been fixed. Thanks for picking this up - these are the kinds of subtle things that are very annoying, but that few bother to mention.

Re: Finding the first post in a thread
I see two outstanding issues relating to message lists and new threads....
  • I have a new proposal pending; but it does not show up on my list of posts. The proposal is Message 1. Don't rush to approve it; it can stay there for a bit until Percy fixes the problem.
  • Lam has a new thread recently approved, at Message 1. He has not made other posts to that thread, and it does not appear on his list of posts.
The problem with bad links going to the wrong page of a thread appears to be fixed.
Thanks -- Sylas

Re: Finding the first post in a thread
There's an Update Member Message Lists item on the control panel. I just ran it and the message lists appear fine now. I also found the bug causing new posts not to be recorded in member message lists. Let me know if you find there are still some remaining problems in this area.

The two examples I cited last time are fixed when I looked. So there was nothing for me to "update" in this instance.
Are there any circumstances in which a message list can get screwed up up? Should an update be part of the topic approval procedure? Or is this just a backup measure for when something goes unexpectedly wrong?
Thanks -- Sylas
(I think I know the answers on reflection. "Hopefully not", "no", "yes".)

Re: Finding the first post in a thread
Hi Sylas!
The answers are "no", "yes" and "no".
"No", because I had already updated the member message lists.
"Yes", because webhosting companies limit the amount of CPU cycles you can use per unit time, and when many people just by chance happen to post simultaneously, processes could get terminated in mid-stream resulting in corrupted data files. That's the reason for the links to rebuilding various types of data files.
And "no", because the topic approval process didn't cause the problem in this case, I did. Of course, if I haven't really eradicated this bug yet, then we may need to rebuild the member message lists again, but hopefully things are okay now.
The datafiles most often affected by preemptive process termination are the search data base files. That's probably because they're the last file updated, and, especially for large forums with lots of threads like Evolution, it takes a long time.

Re: Finding the first post in a thread
Can you say for sure then that the board is evolving and is it by random chance or intellegent design?

Re: Finding the first post in a thread
The recent evidence appears to indicate a random and unguided process. Those seeking evidence of intelligent design should look elsewhere!

Profile Improvements
The following changes have just been released:
  • The preferences page has gone away. The settings for cookies and for the number of threads listed have moved to the profile page.
  • The profile page has some improvements. The settings mentioned above have moved to the profile page. Changing your username is now easier than ever. There is a link for clearing all cookies for EvC Forum at the bottom of the page.
  • The default for saving cookies, which means you don't have to login every time you start a new browser session, is now on. If you don't want to save cookies across browser sessions, go to your profile page and set the setting for saving login information to "no".
Please report problems and bugs by posting to this thread, or by sending email to Admin.

More Improvements Coming
I perhaps should have placed "improvements" in quotes, since this is more a Microsoft style improvement, i.e., one that should have been there all along.
Today a security hole was brought to my attention. Fixing it will result in members having to login again the next time they try to post a message. I was going to release the fix tonight, but when I realized it would produce this side effect I thought I'd notify the board first in case there were any concerns about this. There *is* a "Forget your password?" link on the login page.
