Re: Genocide: Christian Excuses
I wonder if this mindset stems from previous training/conditioning that demands unquestioned loyalty.
I see this same blind loyalty from several of my military acquaintances. They can be extremely intelligent, independent thinkers, strong personalities, but if they find themselves under the control or management of a charismatic leader, they will do anything this leader asks.
I work at a mine where safety is a top priority and where we have safety meetings every single morning. One of our legally and federally enforced rights as miners is that we can refuse any work we feel is unsafe without fear of reprisal. Everyone knows this and many have exercised that right. And yet, one of our Superintendents admitted that if our manager told him to do something he knew was unsafe and dangerous, he would not refuse.
It is his responsibility to promote safety and lead by example, but if he is willing to ignore his rights, then I believe he'd also be willing to demand his employees do the same thing. That is NOT the image our company wants to project. Essentially, he is willing to risk his life and and forgo his rights on the word of another human being who probably does not feel the same way.
How do people let themselves get into these positions? Is it possible we are all susceptible under the right conditions (management, religious leader)? I want to think I'm not, but perhaps it's a natural human behavior or pre-disposition and I'm as susceptible as the next person.

This seems to be another aspect of cognitive dissonance -- he knows it is unsafe but he justifies by being a blind follower, one is more important than the other ... see

It is certainly unnerving to find out how easily people can be manipulated.

Have you read "The Authoritarians" by Bob Altemeyer (available for free download)? It gives a good insight into the mindset of those who would follow a leader almost no matter what - a trait disturbingly common in Republicans.

Re: Genocide: Christian Excuses
Scary. These people are slaves to their beliefs, biases and ignorance it seems.
At the same time though, I think they realize just how ridiculous these positions are. I get banned for asking this question more than any other:
quote:
If God is absolutely moral, and scripture inerrant, then why are there so many direct commands from God in the OT — such as allowing slavery, death sentences for things we don’t even consider crimes anymore, genocide, and rape — that we would immediately recognize as immoral today?
Case in point: The thread from which that last screenshot was taken has landed me in a temporary ban with an admonishment from the admins that, in a sub-forum where non-believers are invited to discuss and question "all topics", I need to stop discussing this issue if I want to remain there.
Edited by Itinerant Lurker, : No reason given.

"christian" sites
Yeah, I've been banned from other sites as well. The funniest was that the admin went around and "refuted" my posts after banning me with ridiculous pratts.
Whatever happened to "turn the other cheek" eh?
Enjoy.

Hah, I think there's some loophole there when it's about getting the last word.
