Re: Crashfrog again
Hey, a real one this time.
Thanks much, Nator, though I see I didn't really deliver anything but a long-winded version of Dr. Adequate's remarks, as always.

mobiogirl - human rights
"Monoculture" v. Human Rights
i mean, sure, most of the credit should go to whoever penned the UN website, but good on you.
It should be patently obvious that the "protection of cultural heritage" (FGM) is sometimes going to come in conflict with other basic human rights (bodily integrity).
In the UN Declaration of 1948, which is still the central reference text in the debate concerning the universality of human rights, the inviolability of the person is formulated in Article 3 with the words, “Everyone has the right to life, freedom and safety of person,” and it is expressed in Article 5 with the explicit prohibition of torture and the prohibition of cruel treatment and punishment.
In 2005, the Organization of African Unity resolved to strive for gender parity.

every now and then, people aren't completely insane. i try to record those occasions
while the rest of us were fighting about severity of wrong and other garbage that's completely unimportant, you actually answered the question.

Succint and to the point, and I'm a believer nominating this. Perhaps I should feel guilty, but since his point is true and well said, I have to nominate this.

Seconded.
Hence, arguments against various aspects of the Bible don't rest on a claim that God couldn't do such-and-such a thing (the Flood, for example) but on the fact that the evidence shows that he didn't.
So very important.

Thanks for continuing this thread! Jar has managed to keep the information/BS ratio high in the topic. Coupling that with IrishRockhound's expert opinions, my expectations are high for the remainder of the thread.
Please carry on.
(Great to see you posting again IRH.)

Added by edit: Upon reflection, I realize I did not give Jar enough credit for the thread. As should be obvious to anyone reading it, he is doing much more than keeping the BS out of it. Jar, very nice job guiding the progress, asking good questions for the experts, and doing much of your own research on the subject.
Cheers.

Thanks, but it is the geologists that are doing all the heavy lifting. I just play Sponge Bob soaking up what they present.

Re: IrishRockhound and Jar
Without your moderation in that thread it would have been a shambles. Without the experts contributing to it, it would have been worthless. You have been able to attract the experts to the thread and encourage their participation with your (unofficial) moderation, organization, and educated questions. I applaud your effort. It is the best damn topic I've seen at EvC.
Dammit man! don't argue with me!
Take care.

Just how old do you think I am...?
On a related note, if you read Foxtrot, you may notice that every now and again Peter has a physics textbook that has a bunch of sinusoidal curves on it.
That's the classic H&R (Halliday and Resnick). Bill Amend was a scientist before he was a cartoonist.

Dr. A keeps it simple enough that I can understand.
In Message 38 Dr. A presents something simple enough that even I can understand it.

Rrhain makes a hugely important but often overlooked point in plain language that nonetheless ranges from Newton to relativity to set theory--great stuff.
NB: He does it with well nigh perfect spelling and grammar, too--vanishing species these days at EvC.
