Re: Bernie Sanders on The Late Show
We are a Republic, not a democracy.
I first heard this silly statement back in the '80's ... as if this made it better to be a republican than a democrat.
One can just as easily say (and with more truth and honesty -- see the preamble to the constitution) that we are a union and not a corporation.
That's a good one, the socialist is going to explain to us the greatest dangers to our democracy.
So you don't think turning the US into an Oligarchy run at the whim of corporations is the greatest danger to our democracy ... what do you think is, then?
... Except they are buying the democrats, and the republicans. AKA the globalists.
You mean the corporation oligarchy? They already own all the republicans and the "elite" democrats, so why would you vote for any of them?
... But that other 30% is way off, enough to destroy America. ...
Can you enlighten me on what that is?
... That's why he gets attacked from both sides. Basically
Except that it is two factions of the same side, the republicans and the DINO (republican lite) neo-liberal (lead by Hillary) that are all owned by corporation donations.
BTW, Hillary now blames Bernie, and Obama for her loss.
Indeed, she blames everyone but herself. Just as narcissistic as Trump. She failed to connect with the voters, period. What an embarrassment for the DNC.

Fake President Donald Trump Takes On NFL Players
Speaking at a political rally in Huntsville, Alabama, Fake President Donald Trump said:
quote:
Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He's fired! He's fired! Fired!"
[crowd]USA...USA...USA...
You know, some owner's going to do that. He's gonna say, "That guy that disrepects our flag, he's fired." And that owner...they don't know it, they don't it...they're friends of mine, many of them, they don't know it, they'll be the most popular person, for a week, they'll be the most popular person in this country, 'cause that's a total disrespect of our heritage, that's a total disrespect of everything that we stand for, okay? Everything that we stand for.
And I know that we have freedoms and we have freedom of choice and many, many different freedoms, but you know what, it's still totally disrespectful.
And you know, when the NFL ratings are down massively...massively...the NFL ratings are down massively. Now the number one reason happens to be that they like what's happening on...you know...with yours truly. They like what's happening.
Just because, today, if you hit too hard, right, they hit too hard..."15 yards, throw him out of the game." They had that last week, I watched for a couple of minutes, two guys, just really beautiful tackle...BOOM, 15 yards, the referee gets on television, his wife is sitting at home, she's so proud of him. They're ruining the game. Right? They're ruining the game.
Hey, look, that's what they want to do, they want to hit. Okay? They want to hit. But it is hurting the game. But you know what's hurting the game more than that? People like yourselves turn on television, and you see those people taking the knee when they're playing our great national anthem. The only thing you could do better if you see it, even if it's one player, leave the stadium. I guarantee things will stop, things will stop, just pick up and leave. Pick up and leave. Not the same game anymore anyway.
Some might have noticed the non sequitur, "People like yourselves turn on television...leave the stadium,", but anyway, here's a list of player reactions on Twitter:

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued this statement:
quote:
The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture. There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we've experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.
Eric Winston, NFL Players Association president, made this comment:
quote:
Our players are men who are great philanthropists, activists and community leaders who stand up for each other and their beliefs.
I am extremely disappointed in the statements made by the President last night. The comments were a slap in the face to the civil rights heroes of the past and present, soldiers who have spilled blood in countless wars to uphold the values of this great nation and American people of all races, ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations who seek civil progress as a means to make this country, and this world, a better place.
The divisiveness we are experiencing in this country has created gridlock in our political system, given voice to extreme, fringe beliefs and paralyzed our progress as a nation. Divisiveness breeds divisiveness, but NFL players have proven to unify peopl in our country's toughest moments and we will continue to do so now.
Fake President Trump also managed to alienate the NBA. The Golden State Warriors were last years NBA champions, and typically the championship team is invited to the White House to meet the President. Stephen Curry decided not to go, so Trump disinvited the entire team:
quote:
Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn! -Donald J Trump
From Trump Withdraws White House Invite To NBA Champions:
quote:
The Cavaliers’ LeBron James indicated earlier that he wouldn’t have visited the White House had his team won. Several members of the champion New England Patriots NFL team, including quarterback Tom Brady, did not attend a White House ceremony in April to mark their Super Bowl win.
The only people Fake Trump can't seem to offend are his core base. They must think this is the fiction of reality TV rather than the real world.

"Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!"
Yet another hilarious lie. Stephen Curry did not hesitate. He said he is not coming. Kevin Durant says he is not coming. Steve Kerr cannot stand Trump. It is too late to pretend that you are putting your foot down. Those folks were not coming.

Un and Ummer
Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un are two rich rulers having a verbal fight. One is an old dotard and the other is a god among his people.
My question is this: What real risk is there of a war breaking out?

Pretty low, IMHO. The NK regime knows that war would mean an end to their rule, so they will avoid it at all costs. Their development of nuclear weapons is an attempt to prevent war and prevent other countries from invading. At the same time, they have to maintain the appearance that they are under constant threat of invasion in order to keep an iron grip on power. On top of that, China really doesn't want a war because it will mean 10's of millions of NK refugees flooding into China.
The mistake Trump is making is helping the NK regime look like they are under threat from the US. All they are doing is playing into the propaganda.

The Proposed Tax Cuts Make No Fiscal Sense
In today's news, Trump and Co. will tackle tax code overhaul next, having failed to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. I am no economist and have admittedly been stuck on simplistic ideas regarding the federal government's philosophy regarding money creation, but it seems to me that it is impossible to claim a middle-class tax cut is going to bring more money into the coffers.
To even begin to stop deficit spending and begin to pay back the enormous national debt that looms over our economy, all I can say is that the math does not compute.
Granted, the proposal may, in fact, stimulate business, but a couple of hundred dollars less to pay in taxes will likely get wiped out by causing many new entry-level jobs that will reduce the hours for other workers. Maybe its just me looking at my own situation, I dunno.

Re: The Proposed Tax Cuts Make No Fiscal Sense
When they say "middle class tax cut" they mean "nominal middle class tax cut and gigantic tax cut for the rich and corporations." It's plain ol' trickle-down economics, the tax cut will sure unprecedented economic growth.
It failed for Reagan.
It failed for W.
It failed for Walker in Wisconsin
It failed for Jindal in Louisiana.
And it failed spectacularly for Brownback in Kansas (hailed by right-wing economists as the perfect test bed) to the point where the Republican legislature overrode Brownback's veto of a tax increase.
But this time for sure, right?

I agree that the risk of war is pretty low, and would add that North Korea and China aren't the only countries with strong motivations for avoiding war. North Korea has the 4th largest army in the world, and one of the first casualties of war would be Seoul and much of South Korea. South Korea has the 11th largest economy in the world, and the 27th largest population. War for South Korea, despite the protection of the United States, would be a disaster.

Re: The Proposed Tax Cuts Make No Fiscal Sense
I remember very well one of Reagan's much-touted tax cuts. My taxes doubled! And the same thing happened to almost everybody else I talked to about it.
Whenever a Republican starts talking about "tax cuts", I get very worried. The US Navy even has an acronym for it, BOHICA ("Bend over, here it comes again.")

Re: Un and Ummer
The problem is that when you have two world leaders engaged in an intense and escalating penis-size contest (which Trump will naturally lose) with all weapons out and cocked, you only need a single accident, a single itchy trigger finger.
Bedford Incident (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOll3v55Dmo):
Captain Widmark: "If he fires one, I'll fire one."
Ensign Danno: "Fire one!"
Blackadder, WWI, on how WWI began (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGxAYeeyoIc -- from memory):
Capt. Blackadder: "So the idea was to have two massive opposing armies facing each other to ensure that war could never happen."
"So what went wrong?"
Capt. Blackadder: "The whole idea was complete bollacks."

Re: The Proposed Tax Cuts Make No Fiscal Sense
As JonF pointed out, the real goal is to give big tax cuts to rich people.
In fact, that is the real purpose for trying destroying Obama are: The provisions of the ACA are partially funded by new taxes that primarily affect rich people, and the Republicans want those to go away.

The Constitution of the United States was a layman's document, not a lawyer's contract. That cannot be stressed too often. - Franklin D. Roosevelt
