Well, for the first time in 800 years or so, the current Pope is going to resign his office voluntarily on February 28:

Papal terminology
I noticed that the press everywhere seemed to be reporting this as the Pope 'resigning', but wouldn't a Pope abdicate like a monarch, rather than resign? I would put it down to using more modern terminology, but no one's accusing Beatrix of resignation - she's universally an abdicator.
