Ok. Here's what happened to me.
In the summer of 1980 I managed to drive all of the way from Detroit ,22 hours, to Oklahoma City without a sleepover, but not on the way back. On the way back I slept in Indianapolis Indiana only 6 hours away from Detroit. The next day, well rested and with a good breakfast under my belt I set out on I-70 with my new 1980 Mazda GLC. By the afternoon, 3 to 4 hours later, I was travelling Northbound on I-75 and making good time cruising along at approximately 70 mph. I was passing a huge tractor trailer when all of a sudden the guy in front of me hit his brakes. I couldn't go to the right because the truck was there so I hit the gravel on the left shoulder. Well if you ever hit the gravel at 70 before, you know what happened next. The car was completely out of my control starting for the bottom of the grass covered shallow ditch which separated the northbound and southbound lanes of I-75. I thought that I was doomed. I could see myself coming back up on the wrong side of the road. However, the car started down in a straight line but then quickly began to go in a circular pattern, and no matter what I did with the steering, the car seemed to have a mind of it's own. The car then began to move in a counter-clockwise direction near the bottom of the ditch, BUT HERE'S THE WEIRD PART. Like a slingshot, the car suddenly changed direction and was flying backwards in a clockwise direction. Because I needed both hands on the steering, just to try and and control the car, my 4 speed stick shift seemed to be shifting by itself and the car finally came to a stop at the bottom of the ditch with no damage. After my nerves calmed down, I drove out of the ditch and continued home.
Who was shifting?
Why did the car suddely reverse direction?
Was an intervening angel nearby?
Explain this one with physics!

Hi TE,
If you believe it was an angel, then it was an angel.
If you want others to believe it was an angel, then you need objective evidence.
Once a while back I was heading for a weekend of skiing on an interstate notorious for icing up. Conditions weren't too bad, but not too good either, and I was driving slower than prevailing traffic. I was passed by a large group of cars, and after a short while all I could see were a few tailights in the distance. Suddenly those tailights started moving all over the place in weird patterns. I hit the brakes and...NOTHING! I was on glare ice, and the weird patterns were cars spinning out of control. I lightly pumped the brakes and very, very gradually begun to bring my speed down, but before I knew it I was amidst all the out of control cars. I kept my car going straight, for to turn would be to lose control. A car spinning in front of me suddenly spun out of the way to the right. Another car spinning in front of me suddenly spun out of the way to the left. Another car spun out of my way, and then another, and we suddenly emerged on the far side of the accident unscathed, a miraculous escape.
Angels? Aliens? My future grandson come back in time to save me with future technology so he could be born? Luck?
The only possibility I have evidence for is the one involving the laws of physics. Your own narrow escape seems the same.

If the steering wheel had no effect on the vehicle
orientation then you had lost traction.
Your tale indicates that you were turning the wheel,
perhaps in a somewhat paniced state, and probably from side
to side.
With the wheels turned to full-lock, and a sudden reapplication
of traction (due to changing surface perhaps) you could
concievably get a recoil and spin in another direction.
The stick shift moving on it's own ... hmmm ... not sure about that
but it could have something to do with the uneven ground. Also
changing the gear-ratio would have had an effect on the vehicle
dynamics.

Do you really think, in your terrified state, in the midst of your disorienting, life-threatening spin, AND the fact that you were in the driver's seat and not observing from the outside, that you are in any position to judge if the motions your car made defied the laws of physics or not?

Or even to remember everything that happened in those frantic moments, such as whether or not he performed any shifts.

Going to have to post and run but this article may help explain the mystery of the shifting gears...

Effects To The Brain:
At approx. 175 bpm, it is not uncommon for a person to have difficulty remembering what took place or what they did during a confrontation
This recall problem is known as "Critical Stress Amnesia." After a critical incident, it is not uncommon for a person to only recall approx 30% of what happened in the first 24 hours; 50% in 48 hors; and 75-95 % in 72-100 hours.
Hope that helps....

It could be as Joz said, OR, it could have been an angel.

You would have had to been there yourself to experience this phenomena. That is all that I can say to address all of your "explanations".
