If I have enough money and manpower, is it ok for me to build a warship, submarine, space craft, or any other war machine? Remember that money and manpower is of no concern. The Laminator

My guess is that if you have the money and manpower you can find somewhere that will let you do it. You might violate some laws obtaining weapons and ammunition even then.

So, it's not legal to obtain, say, rockets? The Laminator

It would really depend on the area. Right now in the US most such devices are controled as Destructive Devices. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Well, I'm talking about the US. So, rockets are not legal then? The Laminator

Fireworks or surface-to-air missiles ? I think you will find that there are some restrictions on the shipping of military weapons. If it isn't in International Law then it'll be in the domestic law of the countries making them. Not to mention that you should be rather more worried about what the intelligence orgnaisatiosn will do. With the current climate of opinion buying anything capable of, day, shooting down an airliner will get some quite heavy attention.

That will depend on whether the U.S. government considers Lam to be a good ally or a threat to its interests. If an ally, the U.S. can be counted on to veto any U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Lam. If a threat, we could probably expect the U.S. to mount a shock-and-awe military strike against Lam's garage.

So, my best bet would be to build these things secretly underground or on some kind of uninhabited island? The Laminator

I think that the new privatization of space travel is going to open up a whole new can of worms in national security areas. If is is okay to have civilians launching rockets into space, what else is going to be legal too? It is a lot to think about. Land, sea, air, and space; a lot is going to change in the near future. {edited for typo} Verzem This message has been edited by Verzem, 07-08-2004 07:43 PM

Well, there are already corporate owned sattelites with the capability/purpose of taking images of specific spots of Earth, and while the legal bits about those are somewhat messy, it hasn't really caused *that* much problem yet.

No, your best bet is to find a government that is corrupt enough to accept vast wads of cash from you and paranoid enough to keep out the spoooks - with an adequate industrial base or stockpiles of weapons they can't use. North Korea sounds like a reasonable bet - maybe China, although they're opening up.
