We all know who I'm talking about, here - those Christians whose board behavior seems to un-Christian. For instance here's g_suschaserfreak from another thread:
quote:
Evolutionists(aka the fools) believe in the degradation of human life...It's actually a better choice to believe in God, because he will give you the desires of your heart, otherwise, you'll go to hell.
I've lost count of the number of times Christians have called me a fool, even thought Matthew 5:22 says specifically not to do that.
Where is it in the Bible where Jesus says that you can talk trash and call people names just because they don't agree with you?
C'mon, you Christians. Do you really think that's how God wants you to represent his message?
(Added by edit: Just wanted to make it clear that I'm not indicting all Christians here - just the ones that think civil behavior takes a backseat to winning converts by whatever rhetorical means necessary.)

Christians from Hell
is what I call them. They're all over the place here in Mississippi.
I once worked at a small town radio station about 50 miles from Jackson. The building housed two stations, an AM and an FM. I worked at the FM, but during the time I was there (early 80s) the AM changed format from Southern Gospel to Contemporary Christian.
Both stations were inundated with non-stop telephone calls from some of the most irate people I've ever encountered. The language they used would make Tony Soprano blush. We received death threats, arson threats, bomb threats, you name it. The most serious were reported to police, but it didn't do any good.
Some of the funniest calls came from people who, often while crying, told us they had "prayed about this" and that they were absolutely certain that God was "testing" us. They would beg us to pray about it ourselves because they were entirely convinced that, once we truly prayed, really hard, and read the bible and stuff, the Lord would show us the Way. If we didn't, we were doomed to burn in hell.
Mind you the music was Christian, it just wasn't hillbilly enough to save us from hellfire.
Nothing serious ever happened to anyone connected with that station, but we were all frightened for a time.

Christians are the worst advertisement for Christianity. Some believe they are also the best. I have not met many Christians who convince me that the latter may also be true.

My personal favorite is being told that I have no meaning to my life, no moral compass, and no concept of what it is to love.
I usually just respond with something like, "Yep, that's why I like to start each morning by putting a gun to a nun's head, making her rape a puppy, and then shooting her anyway when she's done."
After all, without God scolding me like a dissapointed parent, what possible reason could I have for doing otherwise?

Well, at least they were passionate about the music quality taking a turn towards something bad. My impression of "Contemporary Christian" is that it's mostly pretty lame.
Schrafinator started a topic on this. It's "If being Christian is so great, why is the music so bad?".
We could carry on the music discussion there.

Christian singles
Fundie persecution is always taken to a new level when you immerse yourself in it for three and a half years. While in college in BFE Ohio, I started dating a inter/non-denominational christian. She was beautiful and loved sex. (What else could you ask for at age 20 in college?) Until she asked me to go to church with her, I didn't think she was crazy. Coming from a more pragmatic and laid back Irish Catholic background, I thought "what the hell? I can go to church once a week despite my recent denial of god's relevance in my life!" More after lacrosse practice...

The phrase, "Eh... I don't really feel like going dancing tonight. Let's just stay in, play some Soul Blade, read comics, watch Conan, and screw."
That's a direct quote from an ex-girlfriend. God damn, I miss college.

But Dan, you forgot to mention that she said that to your roommate after she'd already dumped you for him.

Crash,
May I offer a bit of Bible Teaching here. You seem to accept that it is good to know what the book says, whatever your choice of beliefs.
Matt 5:22 is careful to refer to brothers. "Whoever says to his brother, 'You fool!'" It's okay to call non-brothers, unbelievers, fools. And even to hate them. "I hate those who hate God, with a perfect hatred." Ps 139:21-22.
Also, Yeshua (Jesus) taught that there would be phoney and real "Christians" (believers). He called the first tares, referring to their comparison as a certain kind of weed, that grows with wheat. The wheat, when full, tends to be bowed over with the weight of the full seed-heads. The tares, otherwise identical, have tiny seeds, and sit up all perky and proud. Latter on, He commented that you would know the true believers by their love for one another, not their love for you. If you mess with one of them, you can expect the most severe response, because people who really love one another stand up for one another. They ought to forgive you for hurting them, but not for hurting one of their own, and especially not for hurting God.
So, in case you might ever want to be a part of God's family, you do well to study how to tell the real thing from the counterfeits.
Cheers,
Stephen

(I saw this old topic and wanted to bring it back.) So Berberry, have your recent experiences been any better or are they all still from Hell?

jesus takes great care to say love your neighbor. he then describes neighbor as being the very people that jews hated the most, samaritans... those from the northern kingdom who just by their location had suddenly become idolatrous heathens in the old testament when someone decided that the only true temple was in jerusalem and anyone worshiping elsewhere was sinning against god.
and then he says love your enemy.
i really don't think brother is a special category of people. neighbor clearly means fellow human being, and i'd wager brother does too. but here's the stickler. i'm a christian, so i should qualify as a brother, but i catch more judgement and more venom and more vitriol from christians than atheists do. i don't think you actually think about it. you people just spew off hatered and self-righteousness everywhere you go. all you're interested in is proving how good and how perfect and how right you are and how everyone else is evil and going to hell. your shining star will soon turn to ash.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, {it is} the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called "Uncircumcision" by the so-called "Circumcision," {which is} performed in the flesh by human hands-- {remember} that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both {groups into} one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, {which is} the Law of commandments {contained} in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, {thus} establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity. AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household...
So, in case you might ever want to be a part of God's family, you do well to study how to tell the real thing from the counterfeits.
it is god's place to know the righteous and the counterfeit, not yours.

Yup, that certain kind of christian... but I just find it odd that I haven't heard of or seen any christian rally FOR people's rights. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Silence is another way of saying you approve of the hatred.
